READING SYNOPSIS #1

I interpreted the concept of 'Open Studio' discussed in the reading as a more abstract term than the literal notion I'm familiar with. The notion of open studio (to me) relates to art that transcends time and/or space. A line I really enjoyed in the reading stated, "the very resistance as things of the past makes them of value in the present and future" (2). I really resonated with this line in terms of my own animation project, specifically with the sensitive nature of the topic I'm discussing. The studio in which art is created goes beyond the literal confinements of a creative space, hence it being 'open.'

This reading relates to my animation project in terms of the transcendence of space and time. My grandfather discusses his experience in Mississippi prior to the Civil Rights Movement, essentially keeping his story, and the spaces in which he used to inhabit, alive. While I am creating this project within the confinements of my own 'studio,' the loose translation of open studio from the reading indicates that the work will go beyond the limitations of my own private space.

I believe it is most artist's goals to create pieces that last the test of time. Although my ultimate goal as an artist is to convey my own feelings, thoughts, and experiences in a cathartic release of expression, a similarly important goal is to create something that is open-ended in time and space. I believe part of the magic of art, is how it is able to connect and translate the human experience. The human experience is independent of time, and art has the ability to connect on a level that transcends ordinary language.
