READING SYNOPSIS #2

This reading directly correlates to the notion of space that is being explored through our project. Over the course of the past two weeks where I've explored what it means to occupy a space, I've come to discover that 'a space' actually has little to do with physical bounds. Instead, the feelings evoked from inanimate objects that lie within a surrounding are actually what gives meaning to space. The reading states, "indeed, the forms of surrounding objects certainly possess such a significance. They do stand about us a mute and motionless society. While they do not speak, we nevertheless understand them because they have a meaning easily interpreted" (48).  To translate to my own project, the state of Mississippi doesn't have its own meaning to everyone. To some, it's simply a state. However, to my grandfather, his experience in Mississippi and the people and places that inhabited it at that time is what brings significance and meaning.

As far as I'm concerned, this reading has no comparative nature to my animation project. In fact, I actually enjoyed this reading immensely because of how greatly it aligned with the concept of our project. The reading leaves off with a reminder that although the size of a family may change whether it be through death or marriage, the events that occurred within a spatial framework and the meanings attached to them will always be the same. My grandfather may return to Mississippi and visit his old memories, and although the surroundings will always be different, the Mississippi in his mind will always remain the same.
